What’s Involved?

A clinical psychologist could work in one of some of a number of locations, including hospitals, clinics, psychiatric units, child and adolescent mental health services, schools or universities, in community mental health teams, social services or prisons. The main role of a clinical psychologist is to improve the mental health of their patients.

Some of the issues which are helped by clinical psychologists include:

  • Mental illness
  • Depression
  • Adjustment to physical illness
  • Addiction
  • Eating disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Dealing with personal and family relationship problems
  • Neurological issues
  • Behavioural issues

Working in a clinical psychologist job can be very rewarding but also extremely challenging and sometimes distressing. You will usually work in a series of sessions with a client, where you will assess, diagnose and then try to help, often working with other professionals as part of a team. You will usually specialise in working with one particular group – for example, children, people with learning disabilities or people fighting addiction.

An experienced clinical psychologist can also be called upon to write legal reports or to act as an expert witness.

Entry Requirements

To work as – and use the title – clinical psychologist, you must be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). To become registered, you must have completed a 3 year post graduate qualification which leads to a Doctorate in Clinical Psychologist, or an equivalent which has also been approved by the HCPC.

You will also need between six and twelve months of relevant clinical work experience to be able to access the clinical psychologist Doctorate course.
