What’s Involved?

On any given day a Dental Hygienist could find themselves cleaning, scaling, and polishing teeth, taking x rays, documenting treatment plans, reporting to dentists, or working with patients to develop their knowledge of oral hygiene. Dental Hygienists therefore require a unique combination of both technical and interpersonal skills; many people are nervous in the dentist’s chair and you might find yourself going from operating a state-of-the-art x ray machine to comforting an anxious patient.

Entry Requirements

Hygienists will require a high level of education in oral health science, including either a diploma or a degree in dental hygiene. Once completed, Dental Hygienists can expect to work anywhere from general practises to hospitals and can enjoy both full-time and part-time flexible hours working between different dental surgeries. Hours are generally sociable, with some weekend or evening work – or shift work for those employed in hospitals, and salaries for experienced practitioners can be relatively high. You will also have the option to progress to practise management or even to move into education, training future hygienists. Those who wish to gain further education and training can also go on to specialist field such as orthodontics or dental surgery.

Whether you want to work in a general dental practise or at a hospital, we can help you find the perfect professional fit to help you take the next step in your career as a Dental Hygienist.
