Phlebotomist Jobs

A phlebotomist is probably one of the lesser known roles in healthcare, but it’s certainly no less important than any of the rest. A phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients, so you’re likely to find yourself working with babies, adults and older people with a diverse range of conditions. Once the samples have been collected, the phlebotomist is then responsible for labelling the samples and sending them off for analysis.

What’s Involved?

As phlebotomist jobs are such frontline roles, you should have a calm and friendly manner and be able to put a patient at ease. It also helps if you’re not scared of needles or blood!

The responsibilities of a phlebotomist include, but are not limited to:

  • Explaining the procedure and reassuring nervous patients
  • Taking blood samples and applying a dressing
  • Labelling blood samples correctly
  • Delivering samples to the laboratory within agreed timescales
  • Completing computerised records

At every stage of the process the phlebotomist will have to follow strict procedures to ensure the samples are not contaminated or mixed up, and these procedures may be different for each type of patient.

Depending on where you’re based, you will work as part of a team with nurses, GPs, biomedical scientists or healthcare staff working in blood sciences.

What are the Entry Requirements?

There are no set entry requirements to start your training as a phlebotomist, although most employers will ask for at least two GCSEs or equivalent, or a vocational qualification in health and social care.

Phlebotomist training is delivered on the job and includes a mix of theory and practical work. Once you are a trained phlebotomist, you can become a member of the National Association of Phlebotomists or an associate member of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
