Job Role: Residential Childcare Worker
Starting ASAP for 3 months initially
Hours: Full and part-time roles available. Work is allocated on a shift rota, and will include weekends. Evening and overnight work also available
Based at SCC’s Children’s Home in Stowmarket
Residential children’s experience isn’t necessarily required, but candidates must have transferrable skills from a similar field (eg: Youth Workers / family support / SEN / teaching / police etc)
A Residential Childcare Worker in a Children’s Home provides day-to-day support for some of the most vulnerable children in the county. These can include children who have experienced trauma and display high level challenging behaviours. People considering this role must have strong relationship building skills and a lot of patience. Personal qualities can be just as important as qualifications.
Working in residential childcare is necessarily child-focused. It involves getting to know new children and helping them begin to feel secure, then providing ongoing care and support to build their confidence and teach coping skills. It also involves liaising with health and education personnel in order to ensure that they get proper access to other services.
The children we support have often suffered various forms of abuse and neglect and as a result may be withdrawn and disinclined to communicate, or may deal with their stress by becoming aggressive. There is a risk of self-harm and of violence toward staff members and other children, so workers will be trained in de-escalation techniques and first aid.
1: 6.40am – 2.40pm
2: 2.20pm – 10.20pm
3: 3.20pm – 11.20pm
Overnight: 10pm – 7am
